RESEARCH INTERESTS

Professor Andy Lane's current research program is distinguished by its interdisciplinary focus across sport, health, and psychological science, aimed at improving both performance and wellbeing. His work addresses real-world issues through robust scientific inquiry and applied interventions. Key themes include:

1. Performance and Psychological Regulation

Mood, Confidence, and Self-Regulation: Ongoing studies investigate how these psychological factors influence performance in both elite and recreational sport settings.

Emotion Regulation in High-Stakes Contexts: Research explores how athletes, coaches, and officials manage emotions under pressure, including interpersonal and team dynamics.

2. Health and Clinical Applications of Exercise Psychology

Prehabilitation in Cancer Care: Lane is part of a team investigating how physical activity supports patients undergoing treatment for oesophageal malignancy (e.g., Pre-EMPT trial).

Long-Term Recovery and Exercise: Research on how physical activity contributes to sustained recovery and quality of life post-treatment.

  3. Combat Sports and Weight Classification

Psychological and Physiological Impacts: Focus on how rules and practices around weight classification affect the wellbeing and performance of combat sport athletes, including those with visual impairments.

  4. Social Development Through Sport

CALM Program: The Cultivating Awareness, Learning, and Mastery (CALM) initiative uses combat sports to reduce anger and violence in at-risk youth populations.

Youth Engagement and Resilience: Exploring how structured sport interventions can promote prosocial behaviours and emotional literacy.

  5. Ultra-Endurance and Public Health

Extreme Performance Contexts: Interdisciplinary projects on the mental and physical demands of ultra-endurance sports.

Sport as a Public Health Tool: Investigating how sport-based interventions can be used to address broader societal health challenges, especially through mood and motivation frameworks.

  6. Methodological Innovation

Evaluation of Interventions: A strong emphasis on testing the efficacy of psychological skills training and brief interventions.

Collaborative Meta-Analyses and Reviews: Participation in consensus-building projects (e.g., Delphi studies) to advance best practices in emotion regulation and cognitive performance.

Professor Lane's work consistently seeks to translate research into practice, addressing both individual performance outcomes and societal health challenges. His current portfolio exemplifies a commitment to evidence-based, impactful research.
