DrColin Dubreuil

Colin's research interests include communication, bioacoustics, primatology, evolutionary biology, ontogeny, and sexual selection. His research focuses on the production, structure, and ontogeny of vocal signals produced by wild vervet monkeys (Chlorocebus pygerythrus). Colin's PhD research quantified the extent of the age/sex differences that characterize the vervet monkey’s grunts and terrestrial alarm calls. He quantified the degree to which these calls differ along several acoustic variables and examined how these differences relate to sex differences in body weight (as a proxy for body size). He also investigated the degree to which vervet grunts vary in structure in relation to the behavioural contexts in which they are produced. He has also used playback experiments to determine whether individually specific variation in call structure have functional consequences in terms of the responses they elicit from conspecifics.
