BIO
Deinsam D. Ogan is a geologist, mining environmental specialist, and sustainability-focused project leader with about two decades of professional, regulatory, and research experience across the extractive and construction industries. His work sits at the intersection of sustainable resource governance, energy efficiency within circular economies, health and safety in mining systems, and the environmental transformation of small-scale mining communities, with a strong emphasis on real-world policy impact and applied innovation.
He currently leads multiple initiatives, including the That’s Me! Project, a UKRI and OfS-funded Higher Education (HE) programme that addresses equity and inclusion challenges faced by Global Majority students, and Pro STEMS, a sustainability-driven organisation advancing STEM engagement, responsible mining practices, and environmental awareness solutions. He also serves as Module Leader for the Civil Engineering module Engineering Analysis and lectures across several Built Environment modules, including BSc and MSc Project Management, Construction Project Management, and Sustainability-related courses.
Although he has extensive experience in environmental solutions, construction, energy efficiency, and widening participation research, his doctoral research focuses on improving health, safety, and environmental outcomes in small-scale gold mining (SSGM), particularly within developing economies. Using a mixed-methods research approach, his work combines statistical modelling (in SPSS) and thematic analysis (in NVivo) to develop interdisciplinary solutions and frameworks that contribute to policy development, environmental assessment, and systems thinking both in the mining and construction sectors, and in academia.
