BIO
Throughout my academic career, I have built a comprehensive portfolio that integrates exercise science and health promotion within both sporting and performing arts contexts. In 2002, I joined the University of Wolverhampton, progressing from Senior Lecturer to Professor in 2011.
In my current role, I serve as Chair of the Sport and Physical Activity Research Centre, where I directly lead the Performance Enhancement research cluster. This involves overseeing projects related to physiological optimization, musculoskeletal health, and human performance. I also Chair the Sport Ethics Committee and have served as Lab Director for Sport, a capacity that includes acting as the Care and Quality Commission (CQC) manager for the DXA service, ensuring rigorous standards in body composition analysis and metabolic health assessment. Additionally, I provide mentorship to internal staff and early-stage researchers through the Clara Mentorship programme, fostering the next generation of research leaders in health and exercise sciences.
My commitment to the intersection of health sciences and human movement has extended to international leadership. Since 2003, I have held various leadership positions within the International Association for Dance Medicine and Science (IADMS), including service on its Board, a term as President, and membership on the Research Committee (2005–13). I currently chair the Professional Development Committee, promoting best practices in injury prevention and performer health. In the UK, I was a founding director of the National Institute of Dance Medicine and Science (NIDMS, 2012) and continue to serve on its management board as the scientific lead, driving evidence-based approaches to musculoskeletal health and wellbeing. I am also a governor at a vocational dance school, actively contributing to its Health and Wellbeing and Curriculum committees to embed health literacy and physical development into education.
Externally, I have applied exercise science principles to long-term athletic and performer development. I served as the scientific lead for a decade-long project in the Netherlands that integrated periodisation and training load management into a vocational curriculum. This intervention led to measurable improvements in participant retention and career longevity, earning recognition for innovation from the Dutch government. I have also provided research support to British Judo and Wolverhampton Football Club Academy, supervising PhD research focused on strength and conditioning, injury risk reduction, and performance analytics. Notably, I initiated a strength and conditioning programme at a vocational dance school through one of my doctoral students, which resulted in a significant decrease in injury rates and reduced training disruption—demonstrating the direct impact of applied sport science on health outcomes.
For the past 30 years, I have been at the forefront of research in health optimisation and human performance, authoring over 160 peer-reviewed publications focused on reducing injury incidence and enhancing physical capacity in high-performing populations. My work has influenced institutional policies worldwide, shaping how supplemental training, healthcare access, and training conditions are implemented to prioritise performer wellbeing. Since 2016, I have convened an annual symposium in dance medicine and science, dedicated to mentoring early-stage researchers and advancing the evidence base for health-focused movement practices.
