RESEARCH INTERESTS
My role as Animal Behaviour and Welfare Coordinator at Twycross Zoo enables me to pursue my interest in monitoring animal behaviour in regards to welfare. My research is very reactive and has involved monitoring behaviour in response to visitor density, sound levels, enclosure design changes, social interactions in mixed species exhibits, and monitoring progress after veterinary interventions. I am very much a species generalist, and enjoy monitoring the largest mammal as much as the smallest invertebrate.
My PhD project with the University of Wolverhampton has allowed me to purse my other area of interest, which is assessing the efficacy of a welfare monitoring program. My project aims to inform best practice in zoo animal welfare assessment, allowing zoos across Europe to dedicate their time to monitoring methods that have been validated to provide an accurate idea of welfare state.
