Dr Fideline Tchuenbou-Magaia is an entrepreneurial multidisciplinary scientist and Senior Fellow of Higher Education Academy who teaches with a sustained holistic impact on students. Fideline has a broad educational and international background having studied and worked in different countries and been involved in or led a diverse range of multi-disciplinary fundamental research and R&D projects. She initially graduated as a Biochemist in 1998 and then completed her Masters whilst working in the food industry as a quality control assistant in Cameroon. Her passion for creating/designing and making products grew and became more intense prompting her to study Chemical Engineering with food and MSc in Food Science and Technology at AGROPARITECH (former ENSIA-SIARC, France). She then worked at CIRAD (France) optimising cereals malting processes as part of a £4 million project, DURAS (Promoting Sustainable Development in Agricultural Research Systems). This was then followed by a BBSRC funded Ph.D. with the University of Birmingham (UoB), UK during which she worked at the interface of Biochemical and Chemical Engineering, producing fungal proteins, hydrophobin, by bioprocessing and using the protein extract to create, for the first time, air-filled emulsions for fat and calories reduction in emulsion-based food products.
Fideline has a strong track record in fundamental research into formulation science and product engineering having worked as a Research Fellow at the School of Chemical Engineering, University of Birmingham, where she carried out different projects mainly in the areas of formulation engineering and encapsulation for application in foods, cosmetics, agrochemicals and energy. There, she was, also involved in teaching, including Encapsulation and Molecular Delivery, Food Manufacture & Technology, Enhancement of Chemical Engineering Teaching Labs and worked as Staff-Student Liaison and Outreach Officer. She has been involved in a broad range of consultancy works for multinational and national companies such as Nestle, PepsiCo, Philips oral healthcare, and Pangaea Agrochemicals, Micreos Human Health BV, Netherlands, and much more.
Fideline growing interest in energy began in 2015 with the successful £934,275 EPSRC proposal on cold energy storage developed with Professor Yongliang Li (UoB) which allowed her to join the Birmingham Centre of Energy Storage. Since then, she has secured over one million pounds of funding from Innovate UK and EU in the area of Energy.
Fideline currently leading the Energy and Green Technologies Research Group with a multidisciplinary team of academics and researchers driving cross-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary research on thematic areas that encompass energy, carbon capture and utilisation, food system and waste valorisation. The overall goal is to develop clean technologies and products to address and mitigate non-communicable diseases, energy and environmental challenges, to pave the way for a sustainable, circular economy and carbon-neutral future.
