RESEARCH INTERESTS
Dr Gosling's historical research tends to focus on the charitable, campaigning and community functions of voluntary organisations in modern Britain. He is particularly interested in their use of seemingly commercial practices and the extent to which this undermines their social ethos.
His doctoral research and his first book explored this question in relation to pre-NHS hospitals and the introduction of patient payment schemes in the early twentieth century. His current research is focused on the ways British charities have used retail operations in a variety of ways and for a range of different purposes since the late eighteenth century.
Expressions of interest in PhD projects in modern British history are welcome, especially those focusing on any of the following themes:
• Social policy and the welfare state
• Healthcare, hospitals and the NHS
• Charity and the voluntary sector
• Social histories of retail, esp. charity shops
