DrMetka Potocnik

Dr Potocnik’s research applies feminist theories and interdisciplinary methods (practice research) to critique Intellectual Property Laws as they apply to Creative Industries (in particular music industries). For her pilot study, Dr Potocnik received the ERAS Fellowship (2019/20), which led to the Lord Paul Fellowship (2020/22) and Society of Legal Scholars Research Activities Fund (2020/21) Grant. She is currently a holder of an IIPSJ Grant 'Colour of Sound' (2023/2025). Her research informs her activism at The F-List for Music, where Dr Potocnik serves as a Director and leads on the F-List Gender in Music Research Hub (connecting feminist researchers in music, across disciplines).

Dr. Potocnik has expertise in the emerging field of Intellectual Property Arbitration, in which she has written her first research monograph: arbitrating Brands (Edward Elgar, 2019). Her approach to intellectual property law and international arbitration (both commercial and investment treaty arbitration) is transnational, as she draws her case studies from national context (Australia, Uruguay, UK and US) and international forums (Philip Morris v Australia, Philip Morris v Uruguay; Eli Lilly v Canada; WTO Australia's Tobacco Plain Packaging).

Dr. Potocnik is focusing on the interdisciplinary nexus between the law and the creative industries, mostly music. Her academic expertise is in feminist inquiry and critique of intellectual property laws, and she is currently working on a research monograph in the area, whilst also contributing to the domestic (with UK Intellectual Property Office, Womens and Equalities Committee and Department for Digitial, Culture, Sports and Media), and international policy debates (with World Intellectual Property Organization).
