DrStefano Vaglio

I am a biologist interested in primate sensory ecology. In particular, I study how animals (including humans) communicate using different sensory modalities (mainly chemical, but also acoustic and visual signals). However, as the majority of my research work has focused on zoo-housed primates, I have also started working on zoo animal welfare and reproduction.

I use training techniques and combine semiochemistry, behavioural ecology, bioacoustics, digital imaging, cytology and endocrinology to address questions relating to socio-sexual communication, reproduction and welfare in primates. I have studied captive primates (lemurs, tamarins, macaques, mandrills, baboons) housed at European zoological gardens and primate centres. However, I have also conducted primate fieldwork in Madagascar (lemurs) and the Democratic Republic of Congo (bonobos).

I won the 2018 Project Support Office's Bidding Excellence Award and the 2021 VC Award for Staff Excellence - Outstanding Contribution to Research category.
